Protecting Comics Long-Term – Mylar vs. Poly Bags

Beitrag von BelindaReynolds »

I’ve been sorting through my comic collection lately and realized that a lot of my older issues are starting to show signs of age — slight yellowing, warping in humid weather, and tiny edge creases. That got me researching the best storage solutions to keep them safe for the long haul.

From what I’ve learned, Mylar seems to be the gold standard for preservation because it’s strong, acid-free, and doesn’t turn cloudy over time like some polyethylene or polypropylene sleeves. It also offers better resistance against light, moisture, and dust, which is important if you want to maintain both condition and value.

While looking into options, I came across custom comic Mylar bags that are specifically sized for different comic formats (golden, silver, modern age) and even have an option for resealable flaps. The idea of a snug fit plus UV protection really caught my attention. Here’s an example of the kind I’m talking about: Comic Mylar Bags

For those of you who have been collecting for a while —

Do you store all your comics in Mylar, or just the rare and valuable ones?

Do you pair Mylar sleeves with backing boards every time?

Have you noticed a difference in long-term condition compared to regular poly bags?

Would love to hear everyone’s experiences so I can decide whether to invest in Mylar for my entire collection or just my key issues.
